Bavarian bodice tops

The bodice is a key element of Bavarian fashion: it’s the stand-out part of the dirndl and the bit that helps us girls get that traditional hour-glass shape. So it’s great that there’s also a full range of stand-alone Bavarian bodice tops: even for those of us who don’t quite want to wear a full dirndl, there’s a typically Bavarian item of clothing that can be paired with everything from a pair of jeans to ladies’ lederhosen.

Here’s our guide to the styles of Bavarian bodice tops out there – and which looks to create with them.

Although Landhaus is that typical German 1970s style – all heavy skirts and blouses, think Heidi – it’s recently had something of a make-over, and you’ll now find this look rejuvenated. It’s not to everyone’s tastes, of course, but if you like peasant charm without wanting to look like Julie Andrews, this could be just what you’re after.

The Landhaus bodices that are leading the comeback are generally in demure, traditional beige and black, but now have added fun details like check backdrop fabrics or colourful laces; you’ll also find ruffled, puffy off-shoulder sleeves giving the whole piece the playful touch this style was so often lacking. Wear it with some of the new ladies’ lederhosen in black nappa leather for a really special look.

What we’re seeing a lot of this season are tops in classic bodice form, but with a lighter, more colourful set of fabrics: you’ll now find traditional Bavarian check in red and white, blue and white, or even in very modern-looking tri-colour versions. Although the shoulder straps with buckles and the lace-up front look like typical bodice features, the material is lighter and more summery; this youthful feel makes these tops look great with everything from short, sexy ladies’ lederhosen to the new kind of Bavarian jeans shorts.

These are the bodices that are somewhere between traditional and experimental: although they look like they were cut straight out of a dirndl, they’re missing the skirt and can be worn to ladies’ lederhosen, putting them literally smack-bang in between traditional Bavarian costume and modern Oktoberfest fashion. Wear them with a dirndl blouse for a more straight-laced look, or without if you’re wanting to be a little more daring…

So if you’re not girl who likes dresses, but want to put some dirndl style into your wardrobe, take a look at Bavarian bodice tops!
