Only one month to go until the Oktoberfest 2015

Only one month to go until the Oktoberfest 2015

Since 13th July, the tents have been rising again on the Theresienwiese like so many hungry bears rubbing sleep out of their eyes after their hibernation, just waiting for the hordes of Wiesn-goers – themselves hungry, too – to come flocking into their mouths. Yes, on 19th September, the legendary cry of “O’zapft is’!” will ring out and the Oktoberfest 2015 will be up and running.

Not that we’ve been letting you forget it! In fact, we’ve barely shut up about the Marstall tent staying, the Hippodrom tent making a comeback, the Poschner chicken shack disappearing and the Schützenfestzelt reappearing with a new design; we’ve probably bored you senseless with information about changes to the reservation system and about training for doormen; and we’ve commiserated with all of you about just how pricey the beer will be this time round…

So, you might well ask, what is there left to say about the Oktoberfest 2015 at this point?

Well, plenty, of course!

It’s back – but where, precisely?

Hippodrom

For those of you who liked the Hippodrom and missed it last year, we have some very exciting news: the plans for a reopened version of the tent elsewhere in Munich have been approved, and the Postpalast building near Hackerbrücke will be decked out with some of the original fittings from the old tent. What is more, the licence has been given from the evening of 18th September on, meaning that for the first time ever, drinkers will be able to enjoy a litre of Oktoberfest beer the night before the actual tapping of the first keg in authentic surroundings (if you count “hall kitted out as tent” as authentic, that is) – and with authentic Oktoberfest waiters, some of whom are so loyal to Krätz, despite his tax dodging, that they are saying goodbye to the actual Wiesn to join his new team. Expect the ambiance to be just as glitzy and WAGy as it always was: the rich-person’s discotheque of choice, P1, will be supplying DJs for an after-party going through until 3am (that is certainly a reason to give the place a try).

Schützen-Festzelt

Interestingly enough, there is absolutely no information available on the new design, except to say that the skeleton structure currently visible does indeed look different to the tent of recent years. This really is a well-kept secret, though, and it would appear that we will have to wait until work is almost complete in early September to get a real impression of how the re-designed Schützen-Festzelt will look.

Oktoberfest Tours

To finish off with something we haven’t written about yet, we have discovered that there are Oktoberfest “waitress’ eye” tours on offer from a company called (watch out, ironic Judy Garland reference coming up) The Sound of Munich. Although most of their tours are in English, though, this particular one appears to be in German, so let’s all get our dictionaries out and brush up on key vocab, because a look at the Oktoberfest from the point of view of somebody who once served guests there is certainly one tour you won’t get from just anyone…
