Bavarian winter clothing: dirndl underwear

We’ve shown you how the Bavarians stay stylish in winter with knitwear, jackets, and long dirndls. And we’ve shown you how Bavarians get through the winter without slipping up: winter boots. Now, we thought we’d show you how they keep warm: with dirndl underwear. With all of the layers of heat-trapping fabric and frilly rims to keep out the cold air, it’s simply made to be worn when the temperature goes down.

Long underskirts, whether black or white, in cotton-polyester blend, are simply perfect for cooler weather. If you combine them with stockings and nice, long winter dirndl, you’ll have even more protection from the cold that jeans or thermal leggings can offer. When buying, make sure you keep an eye out for lacy trim around the bottom because, at a length of 90 to 100cm, this is the kind of petticoat that makes a habit of poking out from under your dress. And if one isn’t warm enough for you, why not try adding a second, slightly shorter petticoat: that’s how the traditional Tracht was worn, both in Germany and elsewhere, by generations of women. They can’t be wrong, can they?

Bloomers
Okay, so you might feel slightly funny about this kind of old-fashioned word, but really, bloomers are retro now, not musty! And with their eyelet embroidery, they are very feminine and can even be sexy. Most importantly, though, they give you the same kind of protection from the cold as guys get from wearing boxers, so there are plenty of reasons to give them a go!

Yes. Well. Underwear and Bavarian leather breeches have always had a somewhat difficult relationship, what with this rumour doing the rounds that real Bavarians don’t wear anything under their lederhosen (like the emptiness under the Scotsman’s kilt). That makes this another area of fashion where women have more choice than men: your options are pretty much limited to boxers with lederhosen-style decoration. Not up for that? As long as your lederhosn don’t have any holes, they’ll protect you from the cold…
